Space Encounters opened Stillness is the Noise, their twentieth art exhibition, on the eve of February 19, 2019. The event was held in their office in Unit 7C of the Padilla Building along F. Ortigas Jr. Road, Pasig City. Their wainscoted hallway led to a whitewashed room lined with dreamy photographs of silk and sky taken by Carmen del Prado. Cru Camara had illuminating pieces put up, and there was a whole wall of oddly serendipitous shots of crime scenes taken by Rappler reporter Eloisa Lopez. Jilson Tiu proved the beauty of light with playful photos of the moon paired with other elements.

One of Space Encounters’ employees and event organizers, Neil Escarez, expressed that their company’s goal is to showcase the artists’ pieces, introduce their talent to the public, and to enrich the art culture and scene here in the Philippines. All the photographs at the exhibit taken by the artists Carmen del Prado, Sonny Thakur, Miguel Nacianceno, Cru Camara, Floyd Jhocson, Jilson Tiu, Toto Labrador, and Eloisa Lopez are all up for grabs. Exhibiting their pieces has proven to be an effective way of drawing in art collectors, and as well as artist to feature for their next projects. Apart from the free snacks and beverages they offered at the gate, they had set up a pseudo-café serving free-flowing coffee and tea from the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

Space Encounters is an interior design firm founded in November of 2009. They are known for their fun, midcentury modern designs that is strongly influenced by Scandanavian minimalism, and their shared passion for art. Co-founders Thor Balanon and Wilmer Lopez’s visions are also driven by their travels and experience all over the globe. Their goal is to capture their clients’ personality and style, and meld it together with their craft. In September of 2018, they released a special edition armchair in celebration of Zsazsa Zaturnnah’s sixteenth year.

Carlo Vergara’s enigmatic character inspired Space Encounters, and swayed their creators and artists to put together a line of furniture pieces inspired by the bright colors and the spirit of the unlikely heroine. Space Encounters held an exhibit showcasing their Zaturnnah-inspired pieces, aptly dubbing the event Zweet Sixteen.

Space Encounters will be hosting another art exhibit in March 2019.

Philippine Fencing Association Hosts National Opens

The Philippine Fencing Association (PFA) held the second national rankings of the year on February 17, 2019. The matches were held in the fencing hall inside the Ultra Philippine Sports Complex in Pasig City.

Trippy

moon

Le Voyage Dans La Lune is a colorful adventure film that is fairly reminiscent of old slapstick cartoons, and live theater. This short allows us to journey with the brightly dressed men in their cannon-propelled jet out of Earth’s atmosphere, and into the untouched realm that hangs over our heads each night. Although initially released and screened as a silent film, this remastered version of A Trip to the Moon was accompanied by deeply immersive scoring. This soundtrack hints extraterrestrial distortions, and fantastical piano riffs, and heavy drum beats that build up the mood composed and performed by Nicolas Godin, and Jean-Benoit Dunckel from the band called Air. In old theaters though, there were narrators who were hired to explain what was going on onscreen – which seems pretty silly since the whole film seems to be self-explanatory.

They spared no expense for the production and designing of this film. There is evident detail in every shot, and there’s always something to see in every cranny and nook of each frame. I have learned that each frame was hand-painted by artists, and it definitely adds to its authenticity and overall feel. It isn’t just great because of its narrative, or the acting, or the production design. It’s fantastic because the hard work and effort simply seeps through the screen. It isn’t perfect or anything, but it truly is a remarkable film.

When In Roma

Actor Jorge Antonio Guererro, one of the supporting actors who played Yaliza Aparicio’s love interest in the film Roma (dir. Alfonso Cuarón, 2018). Quien Magazine, and Vice reports that the actor had been denied his tourist visa by the U.S. Embassy.

Their film, Roma, was nominated ten Oscar awards in October, 2018: best picture, best actress (Yaliza Aparicio), best supporting actress (Marina de Tavira), best director (Alfonso Cuarón), foreign language film, best screenplay, best cinematography, best sound mixing (Skip Lievsay), best production design (Eugino Caballero), and best sound engineering (Skip Lievsay). Netflix’s producer had provided a letter to the embassy, indicating that Guererro wishes to enter the States to appear in events Roma will be participating in — these events include the Golden Globes, and the Oscar Awards. Still, they assumed that he wished to get in so that he could find work.

Guererro claims that upon his third attempt, he had the impression that the lady who was interviewing him was angry with him.

As U.S. President Donald Trump continues to build his invisible wall between the States and Mexico, anti-immigrant groups, like the Federation for American Immigration Reform, are rather pleased with the progress and the dwindling of the number of immigrants that have entered their country in the past two years.

This is news for a couple of reasons:

  1. Timing – it is relatively fresh since it was published last week.
  2. The people – the person affected represents a race that is considered a minority in some places.
  3.  Significance – it affects an event as prestigious as the Golden Globes or the Oscar’s.

About Me

Course: Bachelor of Physical Education

Favorite Novel: The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera

Why? Kundera condensed lifetimes into a handful of pages. He exposed the fragility of the soul, and the depth in which emotions are experienced by both the characters and the readers. It was as though he personally dragged me by the collar, and dunked me into a pool of his characters’s tears, screaming, “Vcítit se! Vcítit se!” (“Empathize! Empathize!”) each time I resurfaced.

Favorite Film: Whiplash (2014)

Why? Music and film rolled into one convinient sushi? And it’s not High School Musical? Count me in. Apart from winning an Academy Award for its sound mixing, the acting was really what won me over. Miles Teller’s dedication to the role matched Andrew Neiman’s dedication to being the best of the best, and under the strict rule of Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) tension eminated from the screen, and right into my head. I remember during the latter parts, I could feel my heartbeat pacing with the kicks.

Favorite Media Practitioner: Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho

Why? Her dedication and love for what she does in serving the Philippines is truly admirable. It takes an insane amount of courage to go where she goes, and do what she does. She was the recipient of the Gawad Plaridel award in 2018, and being in the crowd, seeing her old footage from warzones and storm surges, and clips of those people she has worked with, it’s plain to see that the woman’s got a heart of gold.

Favorite Song and Singer-Songwriter: Stop This Train by John Mayer

Why? This particular song has helped me get through life, mainly because it’s a song about life. It speaks an honest truth about the human condition, and how he, personally, is afraid of the inevitable future: growing old, losing his parents, etc. In a hushed melody, he pleads with the world, asking time to stand still. It’s soulful, and is one of the songs I look forward to hearing him perform on April first.

Here’s a link to a live performance: https://youtu.be/mS2o4q7vRFM

Favorite Website: Twitter.

Why? This site allows its members to share 240-character (or less) “tweets” with their followers, or the general public. It also permits the reposting of somebody else’s tweets via “retweeting”, and holds the “likes” in a list of the user’s profile. It’s a great avenue for artists to share their work, interact with fans, and for me to just express my word-vomit in a safe space, that gives off this non-commital air since my family has no Twitter presence (that I know of).

Hobbies: Fencing, Badminton, Yoga.

J101 Assignment: What’s New(s)?

https://www.bandwagon.asia/articles/john-mayer-s-concert-in-singapore-is-now-sold-out

Surej Singh had a write up on the current status of singer-singwriter John Mayer’s concert that will be held in Singapore’s Indoor Stadium on April Fool’s Day this year. After only an hour of tickets being up for grabs online yesterday (January 17, 2019), the show was sold out. Although it might seem irrelevant to some people who aren’t fond of John and his musical prowess, or those who are bitter that their countries weren’t included in the tour, it might hit close to home to those who consider the man to be their idol.

The article also shares a fair warning about the scalpers who horded tickets, and are reselling their goods on StubHub for prices nearly triple the original cost of tickets. This gathering and sharing of information that is beneficial to the public is the essence of news. It doesn’t matter if you don’t need to hear it, because — this might be news to you — the world doesn’t revolve around you.
